Retail Shields

As California attempts to re-open, cough guards are required for a lot of retail.

We wanted to make an easily configurable, hardware free guard system. The finger and slot design was borrowed from the Intubation box i’d designed a month or two prior.

CONFIGURATION

Since we knew this thing would need to be pretty much customized per application, i opted to start the design in OnShape. OnShape is a cloud based parametric CAD package. The Cloud aspect is important, since end users of this design may not have Fusion, Inventor, or Solidworks licence/install, so the broadest accessibility was important. Additionally, they offer “configurations”. These allow a relatively easy to use way to customize the shape and size of the design.

The other thing that OnShape is great at is teamwork. Being that i’d never used OnShape before, i was surprised at how quickly i could pick it up. I guess once you’re got the parametric solid modelling thing down, the variances between software is minimal. I got a fair bit of the way there, but Brian Shire was a big help in taking it to the “finish line” (for a working configurable V1). It’s a pretty nice platform, and this type of application is utterly ideal for it.

Since starting the design, people on the team have made branches and modifications, increasing functionality, and adding alternative options. Pretty cool!
